Ginkgo, a Friend to Your Brain

Ginkgo, a Friend to Your Brain

Ginkgo Biloba is perhaps the most widely used herbal treatment aimed at augmenting cognitive functions, that is: improving memory, learning, alertness, and mood. Ginkgo has been used to relieve tension, anxiety, improve mental alertness, elevate mood and restore energy.  Ginkgo leaf is also used for thinking disorders related to Lyme and depression.

Brain Function Effects - The brain, one of the hungriest organs of our body, needs to be continuously fed oxygen and nutrient-rich blood.  Ginkgo increases brain memory function by repairing brain circulation and also increases the oxygen content of the blood.  Memory is enhanced by oxygen-rich blood.  Ginkgo both increases the amount of neural transmission and the number of receptor sites for neural transmission, dramatically improving brain functions.  These conditions include memory loss, headache, ringing in the ears, vertigo, difficulty concentrating, mood disturbances, and hearing disorders.  Ginkgo can be used to improve hearing loss in the elderly.

Ginkgo has ginkgosides that work as herbal antioxidants and enhance the microcirculation of capillary beds throughout the body. This is why Ginkgo is beneficial to all organs that need rich blood supplies, including the heart, liver, kidneys, lungs, and spleen. Ginkgo is beneficial for headaches, vertigo (dizziness), hearing loss, allergies, dementia.

Ginkgo taken at 120 to 240 milligrams daily, benefits people with early stages of Alzheimer’s disease and multi-infarct dementia.

Some people use it for other problems related to poor blood flow in the body, including leg pain when walking (claudication), and Raynaud’s syndrome (a painful response to cold, especially in the fingers and toes).   It improves circulation in the extremities relieving cold hands and feet, swelling in the limbs and chronic arterial blockage.

Ginkgo helps with sexual performance problems. It is used to reverse the sexual performance problems that can accompany taking certain antidepressants called SSRIs.

Ginkgo increases blood flow to the retina and can slow retinal deterioration resulting in an increase of visual acuity.  Ginkgo helps eye problems including glaucoma, diabetic eye disease, and age-related macular degeneration (AMD).

Standard dosage: 12-15 drops in water or juice, three times daily in between meals.
