OUR HERBAL ROOTS
KUKISTA was born from a deep respect for plants, tradition, and the people who dedicate their lives to understanding them.
The foundation of KUKISTA traces back to the work of renowned herbalist Max G. Barlow, a lifelong student of medicinal plants and the author of respected herbal texts including From the Shepherd's Purse: The Identification, Preparation, and Use of Medicinal Plants. Through decades of research, writing, and formulation, Max became known for his practical approach to herbal medicine and his ability to translate traditional plant knowledge into formulas people could use in everyday life.
From an early age, KUKISTA founder Sharon Smith worked alongside her father, learning directly from him in what she often calls “the herbal kitchen.” There she absorbed the careful methods, respect for plants, and disciplined craftsmanship that defined his work.
Today, Sharon continues that tradition through KUKISTA.
Each formula reflects the same philosophy she learned growing up: work with the plants, honor the process, and never compromise the integrity of the blend. These botanical formulas are crafted by hand in Idaho Falls using thoughtfully sourced herbs and traditional extraction methods.

Sharon Barlow Smith
Sharon is a second-generation herbalist, carrying forward a family legacy rooted in deep respect for medicinal plants. Her father and mentor, Max Barlow, was a trailblazer in the field of herbal medicine and a lifelong student of botany. He shared his knowledge through his book, From the Shepherd’s Purse: The Identification, Preparation, and Use of Medicinal Plants, which continues to educate and inspire herbal practitioners today.
Guided by his teachings, Sharon learned the art of traditional herbal extraction and refined those methods through years of hands-on practice. Today, she blends time-honored techniques with thoughtful, natural innovation, creating herbal remedies and botanical products crafted with care, integrity, and intention.
